Autoabode × DRDO — Rapid Additive Manufacturing for Indian Defence R&D

How Autoabode’s Duper Series FDM and SinterX Pro SLS 3D printers accelerated prototyping and on-demand component production for multiple DRDO laboratories across India.

Client

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the R&D wing of the Indian Ministry of Defence, headquartered in New Delhi. DRDO laboratories work on UAV platforms, guided munitions, electronic warfare, and advanced materials — all areas where rapid prototyping of mechanical and structural components directly shortens development cycles.

The Challenge

DRDO engineering teams needed functional prototypes of UAV airframe components, custom jigs and fixtures and legacy spare parts on compressed schedules. Traditional CNC routes were slow for one-off geometries, and imported metal 3D printing systems had long supply chains and forex dependencies.

  • • Turnaround from CAD to functional prototype under 72 hours
  • • High-strength thermoplastic materials (PEEK, CF-Nylon, PC) for flight-representative parts
  • • On-site capacity for legacy spare part reproduction from 3D scan data
  • • Indigenous “Make in India” equipment with local service support

The Autoabode Solution

Autoabode deployed a combined industrial additive manufacturing cell built around the Duper Series industrial FDM 3D printers and the SinterX Pro industrial SLS 3D printer. The Duper Series handled high-temperature engineering thermoplastics including PEEK and CF-Nylon, while SinterX Pro produced isotropic Nylon 12 drone components with no support material. An embedded Autoabode engineering team supported CAD cleanup, build orientation and material selection on-site.

Outcomes

  • • Prototype turnaround reduced from multi-week CNC timelines to 48–72 hours for typical UAV brackets and housings
  • • Legacy spare parts reproduced from 3D scan data, eliminating obsolete-inventory bottlenecks for older platforms
  • • Full Make-in-India stack with local service, training and material supply — zero forex dependency
  • • Groundwork laid for a DRDO tactical drone innovation lab with Autoabode equipment and workflows
